Unless you have been living under a rock for over 6 months you will be aware of Volkswagen wrongly certified CO2 levels on their diesel cars. Now further crisis has been caused after VW have admitted that it is not just diesel cars that are affected as initially thought, but approx. 98, 000 petrol cars are possibly also involved.VW state these petrol cars have had both their CO2 and mpg ratings wrongly certified. It is now confirmed that all VW Group cars ( Audi, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen) that are “small engines” that are affected. “Small engines” are cars fitted with a 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with Cylinder On Demand technology.The announcement stated that”CO2 levels and thus the fuel consumption figures for some models were set too low during the CO2 certification process” This would mean anyone with these cars would have been spending more money on fuel due to the much higher CO2 emissions. The owners of these cars should have also been taxed more heavily than they were, as vehicle tax is directly related to CO2 emissions.Furthermore, though it is known that VW has set aside £4.8bn to cover recall costs, they have confirmed that have “no plans” to compensate their European customers whose diesel cars are effected by the scandal, despite having compensated drivers in the US.VW’s chief executive Matthias Müller says the company with deliver technical details on fixing the cars fitted with the software to German regulators by the end of the month. Müller states most of the vehicles effected will not need major work, he said:” For about 90% of the group’s vehicles in Europe the solutions are confirmed.
