What Is An Affidavit

An affidavit is a written statement sworn by a person which has been sworn to be true under an oath.

An affidavit may be required during court proceedings when an individual is asked to make a witness statement which would have to be sworn as an affidavit. Essentially, it is identical to making an oath, which is a statement of truth made verbally at court before giving evidence at court, generally by means of swearing on the religious book of that individual’s faith, but an affidavit is more relevant to written evidence.

One should be informed about the duty to the court when it comes to signing or giving a statement of truth. As with statutory declarations, affidavit and oaths, a falsely made statement which known to you to be untrue will have serious sanctions such as imprisonment.
